I Was Tired of the Conveyor Belt

Walking the showroom floor of Furniture Row, where I worked as an assistant retail manager,  I remember crying out to God in my mind right there in the middle of a workday:
“I’m so bored with my life.”

On paper, I was doing fine; good benefits, steady pay, and everything looked stable. But in my heart, I felt stuck. Heavy. Bored.

That moment was a turning point for me. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted, but I knew I didn’t want this. Not a life that felt like I was being pushed along a conveyor belt of expectations, trading hours for a paycheck and nothing else.

So I stepped off the belt.

I began looking for a new kind of life; one that gave me time freedom, mental peace, and the space to pursue meaningful work on my terms. I didn’t know what it would look like at first. But I knew this: I wanted to build a flexible career that let me grow, pivot, and choose what kind of legacy I pursued.

Freedom Is Not Just a Dream, It’s a Strategy

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably had a few different jobs by now. Maybe even a full-on career or two. You’ve picked up skills along the way, developed a strong work ethic, and grown professionally. But now you’re standing in front of something that feels big and blurry.

You want more freedom: the kind of life where you get to choose when, how, and where you work.
You want more meaning: something that lights your fire again and makes use of your unique gifts.
You want more money: not millions overnight, but enough to build wealth and live without anxiety.
And most of all, you want options.

Because unlike someone in a more traditional field like healthcare (like my sister, who’s thriving and potentially set until retirement), you’re carving a different path. You’re creative. You’ve got a story, a voice, and a collection of experiences that don’t fit into a cookie-cutter job title.

But how do you turn that into a real career?

Careers Are No Longer Linear. And That’s a Good Thing.

The idea that you have to choose one path, one job title, and ride it out until 65 is outdated.
We are living in the age of portfolio careers; where you can have multiple streams of income, blend your passions, and design a work life that serves your personal life (not the other way around).

Some of the most fulfilled professionals I know are doing just that:

  • Freelancing part-time while raising kids or traveling
  • Taking mini-retirements every few years to rest, reset, and come back with fresh vision
  • Blending consulting, writing, coaching, and contract work
  • Using remote work to build a sustainable income on their own terms

In this new world, time is the new status symbol. And agency over your time is no longer a luxury…it’s a right.

My Path Doesn’t Look Like Anyone Else’s (And That’s the Point)

After leaving retail, I started substitute teaching part-time. It gave me breathing room while I built up a small resume writing business. I didn’t have a fancy five-year plan; I just knew I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to help people. I wanted freedom.

Today, that business is growing. I’m on a mission to earn a full-time income from it, using part-time hours. Why? Because the rest of my time is dedicated to other things that matter deeply to me. Writing books, growing an online audience, learning Spanish, becoming a better editor.

Is it always easy? Nope.
Have I made as much money as I thought I would by now? Not yet.
But the fulfillment? The peace? The clarity that I’m in charge of my future now? That’s priceless.

I don’t need permission from anyone to pursue the life I want because God already gave it to me.
And I believe He’s given you that same permission too.
